PERURAIL announces as from April 1st 2009, the Backpacker train service (train 33 to Machu Picchu and train 34 from Machu Picchu) usually departing/arriving from/to San Pedro station in Cusco, will depart and arrive to Poroy station.
The reasons:
The change of station is based on different reasons as the demands of the population living in the areas of Picchu Alto and Tica Tica, where the “switch-back” (better known as “zig-zag”) is placed, due to the significant increase of the urban activity.
The change is also based on the request of authorities of Cusco who are working to decongest the Historical City Center, and it is also a safety instruction to avoid the typical effects of the rainy season (landslides, washouts, etc) on the mentioned areas.
The advantages:
The changes will aloud the residents of the community near by the “zig-zag” to have a better quality life and will also decongest the City Center attending the authorities’ plans to contribute to the satisfaction of the residents and visitors of Cusco.
The Backpacker train passengers will also be benefited due to they will have a bigger, comfortable and accessible station, some minutes away from the down town.
Departing from Poroy will also give visitors shorter and pleasant train journeys; and enough time to get breakfast by taking the train some minutes later or making other plans upon arrival at Poroy station, which is practically difficult nowadays.
PERURAIL is convinced of the above advantages, as it is currently happening after similar changed made for the Vistadome train.
Even making changes is not easy; PERURAIL is taking this challenge to improve the quality of its services, especially at the present time, when Cusco demands to be more attractive to tourists worldwide.
The new route:
