Second phase of renovation

During the second phase, 90 guest rooms and suites have been completely refurbished, whilst retaining their turn of the last century décor making the total of 200 renovated hotel rooms.
The hotel’s main entrance has been significantly upgraded. The pavement has been finished in granite with special heating to keep off the snow. The canopy has been extended into the Mikhailovskaya ulitsa to allow cars to park under cover. Truly unique lighting adds to the beauty of the façade designed by the famous architect Carlo Rossi.
The Caviar Bar restaurant has gained a truly luxurious Russian Imperial touch. The original Marble Room was designed at end of the 19th century and is presently under the protection of Historical Monuments inspection alongside with most the hotel’s historic preservation areas.

The room is made up with marble stucco with green marble floor and marble columns. The decoration details — column capitals, gilded crayfish and marguerite cornice, centaur stucco on the walls — all are influenced by neo-classic style typical for the turn-of-the-century décor. The original Gargoyle fountain has been carefully restored and now the water is playing under the stucco panel originating from Greece depicting wine and music feast.

Strong red colour fabric was used for sofas’ upholstery to give more warmth and joy to the atmosphere of the restaurant. Classical double cloths add to the wealth of decor. Crystal Faberge eggs and goblets adorn the glass consoles on the walls. Whilst the table crystal bears the engraved double-headed eagle – symbol of Russian Empire and the hotel’s logo. China — white plates with black and gold pattern —is also inspired by the 19th century style with the same graphism as of a necklace. Armchairs with brass details are inspired by Jacob Russo style dating back to 1800. The huge antique mirror is preserved intact. An elegant glass console in front of it houses a big bowl with ice and Vodka display. Caviar bar serves traditional Russian menu with wide assortment of best Russian caviar. Interesting to note that Beef Stroganoff is prepared according to the original recipe given by baronesse Helene de Ludinghausen-Stroganoff.

Having begun in the year of its 130th anniversary, the Grand Hotel Europe has successfully finished on time the first phase of the renovation project, which resulted in the complete refurbishment of 110 standard and superior guest rooms at a total cost of nine million US dollars.

French designer Michel Jouannet has undertaken this extensive renovation programme, focusing on making the rooms intimate, whilst giving the hotel’s long hallways a warmer rich scarlet décor. Michel Jouannet has also worked at the Grand Hotel Europe’s sister establishments, the Hotel Cipriani in Venice and the Copacabana Palace in Rio.
