Yulia Pashkovskaya, hotel manager of the Grand Hotel Europe, has been awarded the national Olympia prize for public recognition of women’s achievements in Russia. The official awards ceremony of the prize took place on the eve of International Women’s Day (March 8) in Russia’s Federation Council.
The national Olympia prize for public recognition of women’s achievements in Russia was set up in 2002 by the Russian Academy of Business and Entrepreneurship in cooperation with the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
The Olympia prize is the first and only Russian prize of its kind. It rewards the outstanding achievements of women in Russia in various spheres of activity. It is unique in that the prize is bestowed not for business achievements, but for women who occupy a socially active position in contemporary society. The significance of this public award increases with every year.
The prize is awarded on an annual basis as part of the “Women – the Leaders of New Russia” national programme.
2009 marked the 280th anniversary of the birth of Empress Catherine II. The Olympia national programme, which is dedicated to the name of Catherine the Great, has been rewarding the achievements of the most successful Russian women for more than 10 years now. The dazzling, enlightened era of Catherine is continued in the deeds of our female contemporaries.
The Olympia national prize is the third award in the history of Russia to be established especially to recognise the achievements of women. The first – for ladies of noble birth – was the Imperial Order of St. Catherine of Alexandria, established by Peter I in 1714 in gratitude to his consort Empress Catherine I, who accompanied her august husband during the Prussian crusade against Turkey. The second was the Order of St. Olga of Kiev, which was set up in 1915 to celebrate 300 years of the Romanov dynasty.
Outstanding women who have won the prize include: Olga Aroseva, Liia Akhedzhakova, Eleonora Bystritskaya, the singer Valeriya, Liubov Sliska, Galina Volchek, Liudmila Gurchenko, Larisa Dolina, Svetlana Druzhinina, Dolores Kondrasheva, Marianna Maximovskaya, Anastasia Myskina, Kristina Orbakaite, Dzhakhan Pollyeva, Oksana Pushkina, Irina Rodnina, Irina Viner and Svetlana Khorkina.
Other winners of the Olympia national programme in 2010 were: People’s Artist of Russia, the film director A. Surikova; member of the Federation Council of Russia’s Federal Assembly for the Stavropol region, E. Sagal; deputy chairperson of the Smolensk Municipal Council, E. Ulianenkova; the general director of Schetovod company, S. Petrova; president of the Moscow Resorts Sanatoria and Resorts Union Association, V. Merkulova; director of the Dorremstroi company, L. Pyatigorets; director of the Sertink branch, N. Bystrova; general director of the Lingva linguistic centre, L. Tilene; and director of the Alkor and Auravit companies, T. Dvornikova.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of Russia’s executive and legislative authorities, as well as by public and political figures and Russia’s cultural stars.
Every participant in the project was awarded a certificate and commemorative medal for taking part in Russia’s Heiresses of Worthy Achievements artistic and historical project.
